Healthy Smiles Start with Prevention

At Amelia Street Dental, our goal is to provide the preventive dentistry needed to set the foundation for a lifetime of good oral health.

We Welcome Children to Our Dental Clinic

Paediatric Dentistry

At Amelia Street Dental, we enjoy treating families, and that includes children of all ages. Preventive dentistry is just as important for your kids as it is for you; after all, it’s never too early to start children on the path to good oral health.

Our goal is to make sure your children are comfortable at our Balcatta, WA dental clinic from an early age. We also want to do whatever we can to ensure healthy smiles for a lifetime to come.

Pit Fissure Sealing

Pit fissure sealants offer a safe and painless way of helping to protect your child’s teeth from tooth decay. The sealant acts as a protective coating to keep food and bacteria from collecting into the grooves in the back molars.

Sealants are generally applied only to the back teeth, known as the molars and premolars. These teeth have the large ‘pits’ and ‘fissures’ in them—small hollows and grooves. Because children often don’t clean their teeth properly, they are particularly vulnerable to developing tooth decay. The sealants protect these teeth.

The pain-free sealant process takes just a few minutes for each tooth. After your dentist thoroughly cleans the tooth, it will be prepared with a special solution and then dried. Liquid sealant is applied and allowed to set.

Sealants will usually last several years, although it’s a good idea to have your dentist check them every so often to ensure their integrity.

Our goal is to make sure your children are comfortable at our Balcatta, WA dental clinic from an early age. We also want to do whatever we can to ensure healthy smiles for a lifetime to come.

Sometimes bad cavities can develop in the ‘pulp’ of the tooth. The pulp of the tooth is the part of the tooth that is filled with nerves, blood vessels and other living tissue. When a large cavity has developed, this can be quite painful for your child, and if they are complaining of a toothache, they might need a procedure known as a pulpotomy to remove the damaged pulp.

This procedure involves removing the damaged tissue, sterilising the area and replacing the pulp with a medicated filling. In some cases, we will recommend a dental crown to restore the form and function of the affected tooth.

Pulpotomies are usually successful in saving a badly decayed baby molar, but there are situations where the tooth will eventually need to be extracted. This is why proper home care and twice-annual visits to our Balcatta, WA dental clinic are so crucial to good oral health in your child.

Space Maintainers

When kids lose a baby tooth early, a space maintainer might be necessary to protect their oral health. Many people underestimate the importance of the primary teeth as space-holders for adult teeth to grow in correctly. When a tooth is lost early, a space maintainer can help ensure the adult tooth still grows in the way it is supposed to.

There are two types of space maintainers: removable and fixed. The removable space maintainer is similar to an orthodontic appliance and usually made of acrylic. There are different kinds of fixed space maintainers, and your Balcatta, WA dentist can advise you on the best choice for your child’s situation and oral health.

Did you know that sports injuries are one of the major causes of accidental tooth loss in children? That’s why a mouthguard is a crucial piece of sports equipment. We can create a customised mouthguard for your child that fits well and is comfortable—so your child actually wears it as it was intended to be worn.
